I love to travel! There, I said it.

To be honest, there's nothing more I'd rather do than gallivant the globe, and for the last 20 years that is what I've been trying my best to do. While our individual reasons for travelling may vary, a good trip can inspire and reinvigorate you like nothing else can. When we built bookbarbados.com, making sure we included a platform for Bajans to use to go outside outside was a must. So here we are with Gallivant!

Flight prices ain nutten easy these days, which makes early planning absolutely critical. There is no right or wrong way to travel, so however you want your trip to look, we are here to help you to make that become a reality. We'll be using all of our resources and travel experience to encourage and help you explore the world your way.

Remember, tourism is our business and we have to play our part. The flights can't come in full and go out empty, so us gallivanting is a good way to make sure we keep the airlift we have secure! (That was a good one nuh! lol)

"Check VISA Requirements"

"Check for VISAs"

Our Bajan passport currently ranks 51st in the world which means we have some passport privilege! As of October 2023, according to VisaGuide Passport Index we can travel visa-free to 132 countries in the world! For the others, we MUST have a visa. So before we start planning, let's check the visa requirements for where we want to go, as you want to factor in the time and costs of the visa processing.

Depending on where you want to go, the documents you need to provide to acquire the visa may vary. Generally though, most countries require the following. Hey, don't get overwhelmed, most visa processes are pretty easy to complete.

THE DOUBLE DROP AND INCREASED LIFT

We all know that inter island travel can be a bit cumbersome at times, but this winter we have the luxury of Virgin Atlantic double dropping in a couple of islands that will help hopping over a bit more smoothly! A double drop, (this isn't the official name, but that's what we call it), means that the flight stops in two destinations on one itinerary. This opens up seats on the aircraft for regional travel after the international guests disembark on the first stop.

This winter season 2023- 2024, we have double drops between Grenada and Barbados as well as between St. Vincent and Barbados and they slot nicely in for some sweet weekend getaways.

Our partners at Caribbean Airlines have also been steadily increasing the lift between the islands, so not only do we have more destinations from which to choose, but we can also mix and match the Virgin Atlantic flights with the Caribbean Airlines flights to Grenada and St. Vincent to get our ideal length of stay for our island hopping!

"eSim me please"

Don't go broke trying to "pics or it didn't happen!"

A travel eSim is DATA only and allows you to install wireless service in a few clicks using a QR code or manual activation code. You no longer have to switch between physical sim cards. No, you don't have to change your number or anything, your phone works just like normal EXCEPT that you cannot make regular telephone calls. You can however make WhatsApp calls and all other web-based calls like you normally do.

We like eSims (embedded sims) because:

Being eSim enabled is a relatively new update in mobile devices and was introduced in devices after 2017. So before you buy, make sure that your phone is compliant with the technology. Click here to check for compatability

"Island Hopping"

We're not going to lie; island hopping hasn't always been the easiest thing to do but we know it's easier than you think! So, stick with us as we re-introduce our neighboring islands to you.

Tobago is truly the hidden gem in the island chain. Honestly, we tend to just think about it as the sister island to Trinidad, but you better not let Tobagonians hear you say that! At 115sq miles in size, Tobago packs a biodiversity and cultural punch way above its size.

Three words we choose to describe Tobago:

The folklore in Tobago is strong. From stories of mermaids and mermen to the fountain of youth at Nylon Pool and haunted boardwalks. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to swim in the bioluminescence too!

Tobago will definitely keep you enthralled. It boasts the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere which makes it home to species of wildlife that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. So if you’re into hiking, bird watching and eco activities in general, this is the island for you. The Main Rainforest Ridge means that there are lots of rivers…and lots of rivers result in lots of waterfalls. So, take some time to go chasing waterfalls! We bet you didn’t know Tobago has two other little islands – Little Tobago and Goat Island?? Because of the shallow waters between them you get to experience some amazing snorkelling on Angel Reef.

Easter is a big deal in Tobago and we recommend spending the week there! From the religious activities to the fetes and feasts culminating with the Annual Buccoo Goat and Crab Festival. The marquee event is goat racing and Tobago is known as the goat racing capital of the world.

Fun fact about the goats: It is thought that nanny goats are better runners, however billy goats are the preferred choice since they live longer.

AND…..not to start anything like the great flying fish debacle….BUT…. it was a Bajan who started goat racing in Tobago! No, we didn’t make that up, their history says so 😊.

The renowned Tobago Jazz Festival is usually held in April and they now have their own carnival in October. You still need more reasons to visit Tobago??

Why we love it.

Direct flights!! Each Wednesday, Caribbean Airlines offers the 55-minute direct link from BGI to TAB. The flight leaves in the evening so it’s a good after work flex to make. See sample flight time below. It’s only one flight per week so make sure you book early.

Tobago is a leisure island like the rest of the Eastern Caribbean islands, but it is not as busy with foreign travelers as the rest of us are. This allows it to maintain an authenticity about and it is easy to just get out and explore everything. It means that beaches are serene and peaceful and maybe it would just be your footprints in the sand.

In the main Crown Point area of the island, most things are within walking distance. We love that you can rent a car and just take your time and drive the length of the island taking in the breathtaking scenery. If you’re looking for a romantic escape or just a solo trip, Tobago will soothe your soul.

Tobago is also an excellent getaway destination for group travel – whether for families or friends. The options for places to stay are vast in type as well as in price. Lots of budget vacation rentals are available for under USD$100 per night as well as lots of hotels and luxury villas for hundreds of USD per night. This range definitely helps to balance out the travel budget when you are putting it all together.

There is LOTS to do in Tobago. Don’t believe us? Here are 101 things to do in Tobago.

We’ve partnered with Island Girl Tours to make sure you get access to the best tours in Tobago. Tell them BookBarbados sent you! And if you want to keep up to date on the best Tobago content out there, follow Trini Surfer. We sure do!

So lewwe go Tobago nuh!
